Newcastle Castle

Museum | Newcastle upon Tyne | England | United Kingdom

Newcastle Castle is a historic fortress in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, which is not only considered a significant landmark of the city but also explains the origins of the city's name. The origin of the Castle dates back to the Norman era and plays a central role in the history of medieval England. The Castle is an imposing building that has witnessed numerous political and military events over the past centuries.

The exhibitions in the museum highlight the diverse history of the castle and its inhabitants. There are interactive displays that showcase the development of Newcastle as a city and its historical significance during Norman rule. The prison cells, which tell the grim stories of crime and punishment in the Middle Ages, are another important part of the museum. Visitors can explore the secret chambers and passages of the castle and learn more about the historical use of the building in an exciting way.

Another highlight is the rooftop terrace of the Castle Keep, which offers a breathtaking view of the city of Newcastle and its surroundings. This vantage point was of strategic importance in the Middle Ages and is now a popular spot to overlook the vastness of the region.

In addition to regular exhibitions, Newcastle Castle offers a variety of events such as medieval taverns or theater performances that vividly bring back the history of the castle and make medieval life understandable.

Newcastle Castle is not just a historic building, but also a vibrant cultural site that presents both the history and future of Newcastle in a unique setting. It is an important place for those who want to learn more about the city's heritage and the significance of medieval fortresses.

The entrance fee was considered too high, even for the concession rate or pensioner. There were no discounts for blue light or veterans. The person collecting money at the entrance seemed disinterested in their job. Many empty rooms lacked explanations of their former use. The place could benefit from more direction signs. The highlight of the visit was the view of the Tyne and the bridges, and of course, the exit.

An interesting little castle with numerous stairs! The name of the city makes sense now! It is accommodating for disabled visitors who can manage stairs.
